In my experience: with WSL Microsoft has let Linux save Windows. For the past 10+ years, I have seen software developers either running Linux in virtual machines on Windows, or switching to macOS to get their job done. With the introduction of WSL as a lifebuoy, Microsoft has managed to keep these developers in Windows.
